The Sportswriters Association (ACD), the maximum sports journalism entity of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in the context of selecting the best Dominican athletes in each sport for the year 2009, recently selected Guillermo (Willy) Pumarol Jr as Best Golfer for his outstanding achievements during the past year.
Pumarol Jr received the highest honor from the sportswriters headed by Mr. Ramon Cuello, President of the ACD, by accumulating the most votes for his successful playing in international golf tournaments, placing the name of DR in scenarios never seen by a Dominican golfer. Pumarol, an exceptional talent, has lived in the U.S. for the past 4 years, and is currently studying at Barry University (Junior) in Miami with an Academic Scholarship. He was member of the SSC Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll and member of the 2009 Spring Dean's List, Pumarol is Majoring in International Business.
The twenty-one year old Pumarol has helped Barry achieve being selected the No. 1 Golf Team in the U.S., currently in Division II of the National College Athletic Association / NCAA, an unprecedented event for this great University and for Dominican golf.
Pumarol Jr is presently ranked No. 31 golf player in the competitive State of Florida whose numbers involve more than 180 thousand golfers in the FSGA / Florida State Golf Association, www.fsga.org . He became the first Dominican golfer to enter the World Amateur Golf Ranking, currently holding the 947th position of nearly 3,000 amateur golfers ranked in the globe. This ranking is updated weekly by the Royal & Ancient of St. Andrews www.randa.org. Pumarol has also earned this position for his international performance at the XIX Copa Simon Bolivar in Venezuela, where he finished second individual and third place team overall representing the National Golf Team from the Dominican Republic, and for his great standing at the Sunshine State Conference in the NCAA. One of Pumarol's biggest moves in 2009 was in the FLORIDA OPEN MATCH PLAY when he became runner-up in the championships, the highest position reached by a Dominican golfer in the state of Florida.
